I actually found the rendering part to be the easiest.  I usually set up the scenes and camera angles first, then do the posing, animations etc.  Pretty straight forward.  The most time-consuming part is the Ren'Py coding.  Inputting captions, screen FX, audio etc.  One chapter in the last update had nearly 1000 lines of code.
