In my opinion, this is a solid foundation for something, but the battles stretched on for too long (this could be okay if there were decisions in the battle). Getting extra turns from rolling triples is interesting, but rolling four dice makes the overall roll very similar on average, one or two larger dice would make each roll a bit more exciting.
