In my opinion the repetitive use of angry responses as a result of finding the wrong sword got into a low effort repetitive habit I didn't think too much about. I def think it appeals to a sense of humor that thinks inappropriate anger is funny. Through multiple playthoughs of my own game I think it does feel overused and am considering varying his responses to more than just anger

That's a good attitude to have, and experimentation will help you to grow too. So it looks like a win-win no matter what XD Just a suggestion, you could try something like top-left and bottom-left types of reaction in this image of Magilou. And the bottom-right could also be a good way to mix up Harold's initial attitude when reaching a new smith.
