Everything about her body language continued to warn me to stay away; her lips were drawn into a scowl, arms crossed over her chest, and gaze fixated on some distant point. I didn’t doubt that she was fantasizing some way to get out of this marriage. I had tried everything in an attempt to make things more amiable between us—gifts of new gowns, jewels, offering access to private libraries and gardens. This time, I was going to try to appeal to her with something a bit less material. It had taken time, but I had attempted to procure something meaningful and unique to her kingdom instead.
