I don't understand how the hints on the phone works. Can anyone tell me?

If you mean the notes on the phone, its basically a search/puzzle minigame, they'll describe the main features of something and you have to find & click on that specific item.
If you mean the "?" button, it just shows you if you have anything left to do basically.
If you mean the notepad on the PC, it basically tells you where to go, and what items to look out for secret images, ect.
