You shouldn't need discord or garry's mod to play the game. I tested it for myself and it does in fact do the same thing which is strange. I think this has to do with the fact that the game has a built in discord RPC (rich presence) just like many other games so that you can display what game you are playing to your friends. I will try to fix this issue in the next update.
