Making the game more like "Jump Ultimate Stars"

I had a question, as I have been playing with GameMaker Studio for about a year and I've really enjoyed writing my own platform fighter from scratch, but the online is a headache so I wanted to ask before I purchased. Would it be possible to use this game as a base and change things around so that it is more along the lines of "Jump Ultimate Stars" for the Nintendo DS. It's a game not a lot of people know about (so I'm hoping you do). I wanted my game to have that feel, a bit heavier and a bit slower paced. If I can make it like that, I will pick this up next paycheck.

I looked up a few videos of Jump Ultimate Stars and I think it would be possible to make in PFE. You can try out the free 0.7.1 version of the engine first, it doesn't have netcode but you can make sure that the game feels right before purchasing the full engine.

I have toyed with the demo and decided to purchase the full engine. I do have a new question now. Could I add buttons.. Like if I want to add a separate/3rd button for strong/smash moves not attached to the attack button, and to remove air attacks except for one air attack, done with the attack button and another air strong attack done with the newly added strong button. Oh and add a 4th "super move" button as well?

It's possible to add more inputs, but a little complicated. You need to make sure it gets added for controller & keyboard, and have it on the custom controls UI.
