Getting a gameover resets everything you did between then and the last time you went to bed other than the fact you got a gameover, coin, and kinks locked/unlocked. Garius, aside from the obvious, needs multiple people and some hangouts. Varok is based on how far you've gotten when him in his play scene and talks.
