I've always wanted to make an RPG and this jam seems like a good opportunity to finally get one together.  I'm thinking along the lines of a Zelda-esque dungeon diving game.  Not much story yet, but right now I'm focusing on more game play elements.

(Sorry I'm a bit late to post here.   This is my first game jam and I'm not completely sure about everything that I need to do.)

I've already got some things posted on https://blackears.itch.io/dragon-down.  At this point you can move around, fight one guy and try to escape the cave.

All the pixel art is done by me too, so I'm treating this as an art project as much as a programming one.

Please have a look.  Any feedback is appreciated!

Took some time off for Thanksgiving holiday and am back in the dev.  I've made a lot of changes to the AI so the fights should be more fair now.  Also added some extra lizardfolk to the cave.  I'm thinking of creating a second enemy next.

In this update I wanted to add secondary items, such as health pickups and missiles that could be launched by enemy characters.  So I added a rock throwing bat.  With two enemies now, I think I might turn my attention to level design next.

Made some music for my game and am now working on a boss fight.  Nothing to show yet, but I hope to upload when the fight is done.

I've spent the last week implementing a boss fight.  Something I originally through was going to take two days ended up taking seven.  Creating a three part monster (head, body, tail) where everything has to both be able to attack and be attacked was quite complicated in the end.  The fight could still use some polish, but the basics are there now.

Also started implementing sound effects and even wrote some background music for the main cave area.

Here's a video update of my progress.

Making more progress.  Fleshing out an over world tileset and adding a new enemy.  Also adding fad in/fade out transitions between scenes.  Not sure if this will be a complete game when I'm done, but I'm making a lot of progress.

Big update.  I now have a town area and npc characters you can talk to.  Also spent some time building a system for cut scenes so npcs can be directed by directed by cinematic scripts rather than just be completely ai driven.  Also added a dialog system and improves transitions between scenes.

So, Devtober is over and it's been quite productive!  I've put together a postmortem on the itch.io page if you'd like to learn more about the journey:  https://blackears.itch.io/dragon-down/devlog/309942/devtober-postmortem

I plan to keep working on the project.  The main thing still to add is an item system.  After that I'm going to be focusing on story telling.
Please check out the game and let me know what you think!
