Hi shadesun, you have to wait until you are fatigued to sleep (fatigue bar will go red when it is low) You currently have to sleep on a cot by placing it on the ground and pressing E when looking at it to open the sleep menu. If you try to sleep when you are not tired enough you will get a "not tired" notification. I plan to add a antelope hide bedroll and also the ability to sleep on the bare ground at reduced regeneration rates in the future.
