Up and down arrows move from left to right. Left and right arrows attempt to unlock at the spot chosen from the up and down arrows. There are sound ques that help in determining the direction you should go, so play with sound on(i play with sound off so i was very frustrated with lock picking as well). After the first time or two it seemed to me that the position changed to be close to the starting position and a little moving left or right(mostly to the left) would get you close to unlocking the door.  (need around 3-4 lock picks on average to unlock something so i would stock up.)
