My First Game Jam | DevLog

Idea is to build a simple 2D platformer with some puzzle elements. Plot is that a pirate needs to collect 4 pieces of the map to get to freedom. Main mechanic will revolve around him changing to different pirates to solve puzzles.

eg. a higher jump or is smaller to fit through a smaller space

Minimal Viable Product

  1. Movable character
  2. Character transform with changes
  3. Map with puzzles
  4. Item pick up & count

Extras

  • Music & sound effects
  • More ambience and environmental effects

Bonus Features

  • Cinematic Intro Jump scene
  • Enemies & Combat
  • Advanced Attacks for Captain

Not sure about my next steps. But excited about the challenge :D First game & first jam! Here we go! #MyFirstGameJam

Update I

Decided to make use of an asset pack as art isn’t my strong suit, in the back of my head I kinda knew I would. I found the perfect assets. I will list/credit them in due time, but now I have a vision and some amazing art to use I need to focus on the functionalities.

I got a bit carried away with the characters and all the fun stuff, but now to focus on the actual game part and start getting this idea out from my head and onto the screen… Or at least as close as possible but so far so good! :D

Update II

So glad I decided to use an asset pack, the art is so good and I would have just gotten frustrated doing it myself. Even with the art sorted there was so much to learn, building levels was next and the basics down but when I wanted to make anything interesting it was such a hassle doing it block for block.

I discovered Autotile and so much makes more sense, several Youtube tutorials later I had a semi-decent auto title system up and running, but there are still some spaces that need work. But it will do for now

I like how the clouds and the whole vibe is coming along, it just needs some movement to make it come alive. But now I really need to focus on the characters as this took me way too long. Also need to circle back to fix that bitmask, will do that in the polish phase

Puzzle games tend to be difficult in their level designs right? So how would you go about that issue?

I decided to simplify my whole idea, and just have environmental obstacles rather than puzzles as I rather want to have a done game. And I’ve learned so much through the process already.

That Tutorial by BornCG was a real life saver
