Fantasy World

Why is "Expedience" called "Expedience"?

As I understand it, this mechanic is very similar to “Experience” in Apocalypse World and Dungeon World. The name “Experience” makes sense for this mechanic: the more experience a character has, the more cool things they can do.

The name “Expedience” makes no sense to me for this mechanic. Expedience is about being more efficient or convenient, but the mechanic is about neither of those. The points that you mark make you more competent or give you more skills.

I guess I’m just wondering: Why are the points called “Expedience” in Fantasy World? Maybe there’s a good reason I’m not seeing right now.

Thanks! :)

Well, here is my reasoning...

If I am not mistaken, expeRience in both AW and DW is solely accumulated to gain an Advance or a Level Up. There are no ways to spend it during active play to do anything else.

On the contrary in FW you can first and foremost spend 2 expeDience to gain 1 Advantage (also multiple times, to offset Disadvantage) in any roll. Another use of expeDience is to fuel some Common and Class moves, . In both cases these points are very convenient to have and use, and mainly boost a PC's efficiency/effectiveness.

Then, if you amass a lot of them, you can spend them to speed up your personal Growth.

Does it makes sense? :)

In AW and DW Experience is solely used to level up, although in several DW hacks (Homebrew World, for example), Experience can be used for other things, for example, to gain advantage.

Your reasoning sort of makes sense to me. It still seems like a bit of a stretch to use “expedience” to describe the things its describing, especially in the way “expedience” is commonly used in English.

I guess my main worry about the word is that it sticks out as going against one of the three main goals of Fantasy World: to be “Accessible.” “Experience” is an accessible mechanic that has near cultural ubiquity, and is easy to grasp for many players (i.e. the more you play, the more experience you have playing). Expedience is clever, but it makes the players do small mental gymnastics to get to the meaning you want to convey.

I really love how accessible and practical the rest of Fantasy World is! This one name just stood out to me.

Thanks for your replies! :)
