(My theory is that Damon is the adopted son of Kat and August-who have now gotten their bodies back and moved back to Hell. I would guessss-that August felt INCREDIBLY guilty for being indirectly responsible for cracking his orb-and is probably the one who healed it-to the best of his ability at least.)
