I have read that generating babies is to do with having enough food. 

However, despite having plenty of food, no additional survivors are spawned. Am I doing something wrong?

Then as the raft expands, the workload become too great for just two survivors. I see that you have recognised that being circled by 20 sharks and having too much moss growing can be an issue. (I guess surviving isn't supposed to be easy!)

My next question is, if bone only comes from survivors. It's a fine line to let one die to collect their bones...and then quickly make enough food to prevent anyone else dying...let alone keep the male/female balance.

To make survivors ready to raise babies, besides enough food and surviving space, they must have limited work to do.

Another way to get bones is to kill sharks. And bones are for making weapons. Weapons will help your survivors kill sharks easier.

I have since managed to kill a shark...but know I see that I need to allow some down time for my survivors.

I have now tried for like 15 hours with 100% focus on getting 1 baby and 1 bone.... It is impossible.. I have now killed like 50 sharks and they just die and go under water and I dont get any bones..
Babies.... I have tried having 100 Kababs, and rafts at sizes ranging up to 12x12 and letting my survivors stay idle for several ingame days.. And not a single baby.

This game is freaking awesome, and I hope it is still under development! But I would LOOVE to see someone capture, on a video, making a baby in 0.4.1 because I dont think it's possible..

This game is so simple and so great, it could be huge!

I just realised there was a 0.4.2 version.. But it doesnt seem like its possible to make babies in that version either :/
