Uh, there's no 1 key... I've never used a typewriter, so I don't know if this was intentional or not. You can use an l in place of a 1, though.
Most typewriters don't have a 1 key - this is because, as you've discovered, lower-case L is a fine substitute.

The 1 key was "useless" because, to gain in rapidity, people write I987 with an "i" upercase. It's faster to write I9xx than 19xx.
