I wanted the puzzles to be solved in more than one way, so that's good you solved it that way, the hints are around the table there should be a story to it, didn't want to spoil much.
I will be improving the sense of progress, thanks for the notes!
SPOILER: When the puzzle is solved there should be a voice line and a light turning on, not sure if that happened to you but ultimately the sounds and music will be an essential part of the full game!
