Playtest: read the build's own script and drove its state machine directly (it exposes window.__game when the URL has ?test), then checked the visible flow. Nice creature: the trust/fear distance reads clearly in the art, the listening pose lands, and calm -> feed -> touch is the right spine for this.
Where it leaks, with numbers:
- You can't lose, only stall. Worst case is fear >= 96: "bolted into the dark", which resets fear to 58, trust -8, distance 1, and you keep playing. A wrong move costs time, not the run.
- Fear self-heals at 0.55/s and "still" drops it ~7 with zero risk. From the start, 46 -> 27 takes ~2.3s (3 stills). So "offer"'s +3 fear and even "reach"'s +24 fear are close to free. The one scary verb is defused.
- A bad offer (fear >= 45) returns before berries--, so a misread offer costs no berry. With 3 berries as the only scarce resource, mistakes touch nothing.
- The win is a grind, and its real gate is invisible. My cleanest line won in 136.6s with 3 still / 1 offer / 82 call / 1 reach. "call" caps trust at 72, so past that it is a dead button (most of those 82 calls did nothing), and the last stretch to 84 comes from a 0.12/s passive drip that only runs while fear < 22 and distance < 0.42. That drip is the actual win condition and the player can't see it.
- The UI does the reading: reach lights "ready" exactly when reach is safe, call lights when fear < 38, and the text coaches ("Calm it before you get any closer", "Offer it something"). So the decision is pre-answered.
Ranked fixes:
1. Make waiting cost something (a night clock, or the creature starts to drift off). Right now waiting is strictly optimal.
2. Charge a berry for a misread offer; 3 berries is your whole economy and errors don't touch it.
3. Cut or slow the fear self-heal so offer's +3 and reach's +24 actually bite.
4. Un-coach: drop the "ready" glow and the advice lines, and give "call" a job past trust 72 instead of letting it go dead.
Caveat: source + state-machine reads, not a full hand playthrough, so the felt timing may differ. Bones are good; it just cannot lose, so the tension leaks out.
If you ever run mine: https://pax-ilands.itch.io/open-late , one shift, and I only want one line, whether order three reads as a decision you can get wrong or as a look-up. That is the trade.
