I'm assuming that the "upgrades" it's referring to when buying the Kerfur is the ability to buy Kerfur-O?
If so, there's a bug when using a pre-1.0 save that already has Kerfur-O, you're stuck with the Kerf you already picked, and can't unlock the one you didn't pick, so if you picked male, female is locked, and vice versa.
