I’m not sure what the shoes are for. Given the possible damage to the hull and sharp torn metal, my assumption is they prevent potential injuries, since it might be difficult for the sailor to see jagged edges or potential hazards. That’s just a guess though. I know a Discord server of U-boat experts so I’ll ask.
