hi, thanks for playing!!! :))) it seems like the father scene is well liked, which is unexpected xDD Thanks again!

If you can forgive my rambling, here's my guess why it works so well (minor spoilers for those who hasn't played yet!):

  • the shot is well crafted (camera looks up at Father's sprite, that alone makes him look menacing)
  • shadows covers a portion of his face, only one eye is visible (emphasizing the sense of danger)
  • his facial expressions are limited but very apt: a smirk of disdain and disappointment. This prevents us from reading his emotions, and that is very unsettling feeling psychologically, we are wired to rely on face expressions
  • before this scene the narration did a great a job describing Jackston's insecurities and yearning for approval, this juxtaposition landed perfectly when we realized "yeah, he wont get that from his father"
  • music choice is great, aligns with sense of dread and tension in the room
  • the violent climax transitioned into a dark screen, which is perfect for this. It lets us sit there for a second and let our imagination do the work (and imagination is often more graphic than any CG)
  • I mentioned this before but art in itself is beautiful so that helped a great deal too

And finally... I think it's very relatable. I think most of the people have some figure of authority in their life that made them feel this way. Father, mother, teacher, boss etc. Maybe not as violent for some, maybe even more violent for others, but the core feeling of "I depend on you, I look up to you, I really, really need you to like me / approve of me" is almost universal.

In other words, fantastic scene! I would love to read more of your work in future!
