Runes play an important role in strengthening your lineup, but higher rarity does not always mean better performance. The most effective Rune setup depends on your core heroes, team composition, and playstyle.
The basic principle is simple: build your lineup first, then choose Runes that support it. Early on, prioritize stable and consistent effects. Once your core build is established, you can gradually optimize for higher performance.
1. MATCH RUNES TO YOUR LINEUP
Avoid mixing Runes from different playstyles without a clear purpose.
Assassin-focused teams should prioritize effects that support mobility and burst damage. Monkey teams benefit more from effects related to basic attacks and Energy, while Summon teams should focus on improving summoned units.
Pentagon Runes are especially important because their starting effects should match your core class.
For Assassin teams, prioritize Assassin-related starting effects. Summon teams should use Summon-related effects, while damage-focused teams should choose effects that directly support their main damage dealers.
For specialized lineups, the same principle applies.
Control teams such as Fox and Little Green Snake should prioritize Control enhancement.
Monkey teams can consider Energy disruption.
Summon teams can consider effects such as Summon Immortality or Sacrifice to improve the survivability of summoned units.
2. PRIORITIZE CONSISTENCY IN THE EARLY GAME
For newer players, consistent Rune effects are generally more reliable than effects based heavily on probability.
Starting Runes provide 160 Energy at the beginning of combat, helping your team reach its first Ultimate more consistently.
By comparison, Divine Weapon-type Runes have a 12% chance to immediately increase their level to 3. This provides higher potential value, but the result is less consistent during the early stages.
After unlocking the fourth Awakening, Divine Weapon can reach Level 6, making it more worthwhile to consider as part of your later-stage setup.
The general approach is simple: prioritize consistency early, then pursue higher potential as your build develops.
3. USE IRON WALL WITH PROPER ENERGY SUPPORT
Iron Wall is a reliable defensive option for the Square Rune slot and can be particularly useful during early progression.
However, it has an important drawback: it reduces Energy by 20 every second.
If your lineup does not have sufficient Energy recovery, you may gain additional durability but struggle to charge your Ultimates efficiently.
For this reason, Iron Wall works better with heroes that can provide Energy recovery, such as Turtle Prime Minister.
Unshakable Mountain is more suitable for Monkey teams in later progression. Its value becomes more competitive at higher levels, so there is generally no need to invest heavily in it too early.
4. DO NOT CHASE ORANGE RUNES TOO EARLY
Higher-rarity Runes are valuable, but chasing a full set of Orange Runes is not necessary during early progression.
Core Purple Runes can provide enough value while you build your main lineup.
Upgrade priorities are also important. Focus on your core defensive Rune first, then strengthen key Triangle Runes such as One-Hit Kill and Basic Training. After that, improve your Pentagon starting Rune before investing heavily in minor Runes.
Most importantly, avoid spreading your resources across multiple Rune sets.
A focused Rune setup for your main lineup will usually provide much better value than several underdeveloped sets.
5. HOW TO BUILD MINOR RUNES
Keep your minor Rune setup simple during the early stages.
For the nine minor Rune slots, Attack-related effects can be prioritized instead of spreading your resources evenly across Attack, Defense, and HP.
Once your lineup is fully established, adjust your minor Runes according to your chosen playstyle.
Assassin teams can gradually add Critical Rate and Critical Damage.
Summon teams can prioritize HP to improve the survivability of summoned units.
The priority should always be the same: establish the core build first, then optimize the smaller details.
6. MANAGE THE RUNE SHOP CAREFULLY
The Rune Shop automatically refreshes every 30 minutes.
Whenever possible, make use of the free refresh before spending Diamonds.
Diamonds are valuable during early progression, so paid refreshes should be used selectively rather than repeatedly chasing a specific Orange Rune.
Rune slots should also be unlocked according to your available resources. Prioritize the first two slots and consider the third slot once your overall resources are more stable.
Limited-time events are another important source of rare Runes, so make sure to check their available rewards.
FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS
There is no single Rune setup that works for every lineup.
Build your main team first, then choose Runes that directly support its strengths.
Prioritize consistent effects during early progression.
Make sure defensive Runes do not conflict with your Energy requirements.
Match Pentagon Runes with your core class.
Use Purple Runes as a practical transition option instead of forcing Orange Runes too early.
Most importantly, concentrate your resources on one or two main Rune builds rather than spreading them across everything.
A higher-rarity Rune is not automatically the better choice. The best Rune is the one that fits your lineup and makes your core strategy work better.
