Hi MatBones,
Thanks so much for reaching out! We really appreciate your interest in playing on original hardware—that’s truly the best way to experience the game!
To give you complete peace of mind: the game was built specifically for original Game Boy hardware, which is why our physical cartridge release (available via VGP website) saves natively and instantly without any issues, just like classic retro titles.
Because we care deeply about player experience, when we first received reports about flash cart save issues, our team spent time investigating to see if we could fix it on our end. What we discovered is that flash carts use onboard chips to translate Game Boy memory calls onto a MicroSD card. Standard Game Boy software unfortunately doesn't have system-level access to communicate with or control those flash cart hardware routines.
That said, the game works and saves great on flash carts too! It just requires following the specific save workflow designed by your cart's manufacturer (Krikzz / EZ-Flash):
- EverDrive GB X3: Save in-game, then return to the EverDrive OS menu before turning off the console to flush the save data to the SD card.
- EverDrive GB X5 / X7: Save in-game, then wait about 3 seconds before switching off the console so the memory charge holds.
- EZ-Flash Junior: Save in-game, then give it a 3–5 second delay before powering off to let the cart finish writing to the SD card.
To help flash cart users as much as possible from our side, we even built mandatory delays and proper memory routines directly into the game's code to give these carts all the time they need to react.
If you follow those quick steps for your cart—or play via our physical cartridge release—your progress will save completely safe and sound. Please let us know if you have any other questions at all!
