Lots of good things. Nice bold neon like graphics. Everything included, settings, an upgrade shop, different weapons.

Things to improve:
The game is a little dull. I don't care if I die or not, the gameplay is very repetitive, the enemies are quite dumb. I wanted to fly around the screen a bit with some vertical movement, even if you limit it to the bottom half of the screen. I found myself just holding down the mouse button so why not have firing automatic, so your ship is constantly firing. It got much better after a few upgrades, and I get you don't want to give everything for free straight away, but I think it starts too slow.

The three cards upgrading option is a bit stale too IMHO. I would drop that entirely, leave all the upgrading in the shop. Also a 'shop' does not really fit the theme, perhaps it should be your mothership. Everything has to happen faster, so first wave just bombs, second wave bombs and those white ships, third wave those two and the one that drops down etc.

I think overall it is a good effort, but as the player you quickly get bored. Everything is so predictable. I also think you have not played with the options fully. Like what if a complete wall of mines came down. What if they fell at different speeds. What about ships coming down and going back up again, like the old school galaxians.

Finally I would suggest that the first scene is a fully powered up and upgraded ship fighting an unwinnable fight. When you lose you go back to the basic slow ship, but the player has seen and felt what could be. Now your ship is disabled or damaged and you need to collect something to get the upgrades, not earn money to spend in the shop after you have died. So you need a story of some sort, something to be achieved, something to lend some depth to the game.

The shop needs a bit of work too. Perhaps showing all the available things to buy, perhaps the ones you cannot get yet are greyed out. Also when I click on a weapon I should not have to then click 'use'. The highlighted weapon would automatically be the one I use.

Also the weapons themselves from the player should be quicker. Also pressing 1 or 2 is akward. Why not W and S? Drop the mouse input for firing, make that automatic. Ship flies up from the bottom, enemies appear, weapons start auto firing is what I would suggest.

Any way, good luck with it. I hope some of those comments helped in some way.

Thanks for the feedback! Adding some vertical movement isn't too bad of an idea. I might limit it to the bottom 25-35% of the screen, for difficulty purposes. I like you suggestions to make the enemies a bit smarter, so I will try and do that. Adding randomness in mines just to spice up gameplay is a change I should have already done. I might make it so jets don't spawn from the exact middle spot every time, and the drills will have a random speed. I might add modifiers later in development, like an example may be "Asteroids: Asteroids have a random chance to fly onto the screen, +25% overall cash" Just an idea. I don't quite understand how I would implement upgrades in another way, because the game is suppossed to be heavily leaned into the upgrade system. If you have ideas onto how I should implement that otherwise, I'd be glad to hear.

The game is really suppossed to be beaten once, as I do notice the lack or replayability. That has been an issue I have been trying to solve for a while.

I absolutely love the idea of a overpowered jet, maybe on like wave 25 where you are close to Earth to give players a glimpse of what the game can be. I might add a Z for ability 1 and X for ability 2. because W and S wouldn't work if I were to add vertical movement. I have experimented with automatic shooting, I personalyl didn't really like it because of darts like Split with 1.5 second cooldown. However, I will add an automatic shooting in settings if you want it. I think spacebar could also be used for shooting so it can be a keyboard-excludive game (unless you use split or have the rebound upgrade, which make it so right clikc redirects the bullets toward your mouse. I might add a key for that, like maybe 3 or C.)

For the shop, I like the idea of having the jet grayed out if you do not own it. Going onto your idea, Maybe there is a text above the jet saying "Item not owned" and when you do have it, but when you do not have it in use it says "not in use" and if you are using it is says "in use". Implementing an auto-own feature isn't a bad idea either, so I will just add that.

I'll see what I can do lore-wise to add depth to the game. I was thinking in later updates like 1.66 that completing certain tasks unlocks entries in a lore book that tells the player about their mission.

This is incredible feedback for my first game . Thank you.

No, avoid writing at all costs. People hate reading. You would have to come up with something graphical. So clear a wave and the ship flies to the middle of the screen and comes to a stop at a base perhaps or some sort of way station like it is parking. Would at least explain why it has access to the 'shop'. It it was changed to the Hanger Bay, where you can buy upgrades and buy repairs etc rather than auto health regeneration. You could add smoke coming off the ship to indicate damage. Then when the next level starts you fly away from the waystation again.

As for the auto shooting I think it could work. Maybe only on appropriate ammo, so the darts in the shop could clearly indicate this is not auto fire. Adding a differential to some of the ammo types.

Of course you don't want to change your game too much, I get that, but you do need something to tie the different parts together a bit more. At the moment after a level it says "Back to menu" like the game is over. If it said "Landing in Hanger" that would be better would it not?

Anyway, look forward to seeing your improvements. I thought the cards could do with being a bit more colourful with bigger images portraying the upgrades a bit better. So again I don't have to read anything! You would be amazed at how people never read anything unless they are really committed to the story. Like skipping cut scenes and dialogues.

I do read all the Cards because i like choosing the best Upgrades for my Ship, which is only possible if i pay Attention to the Differences between them.

Looking at Pictures can help me to understand the Cards but i’ll still know that i need to read the Cards to understand them fully.

I have two handful of Suggestions for Improvement:

Essential

The Game is really fun. i would have beat Level 1 if i wasn’t hindered by these Features missing.

  1. Make shooting automatic because i should never not shoot.
This frees up both Mouse Buttons for the Abilities.
  2. The same Settings as on the Main Menu, should be possible to change when the Game is paused
  3. It’s impossible to know when my Ship is damaged.
Add a Sound and Hitstop when that happens.
  4. Explosions should damage nearby Enemies.

Nice to have

These are also essential for some Players, but a beginner Game Project shouldn’t be too hung up on Accessibility.

  1. Setting for my Ship to home towards the X‑Position of my Mouse Cursor.
Enabling this would also add an outstanding Reticle Mouse Cursor to the Game Field.
  2. Controls Remapping
  3. The Name Entry Field looks too long for the maximum of 16 Characters. It should be shorter.

Hey poppy ribbon! I need some clarification from a few things. When you mean "Explosions should damage nearby enemies" do you mean the player explosions or the enemy explosions? The play explosion splash can vary in size, so you may not notice the player explosions. If you mean enemy explosions, that is actually included in the update I am currently working on. When you mean to add setttings to change when the game is paused, what do you mean by that? The game should only pause when you press "P" or "ESC" or when you get an upgrade. Overall, I can quickly implement these, and this is great feedback. Thank you.

When you mean to add setttings to change when the game is paused, what do you mean by that?

The main Menu has Settings that don’t change the Gameplay too much — Settings for Sound & Graphics.

It’s important that i can change these Settings in the Middle of a Round of the Game too, so this Settings Button should be in the Pause Menu too.
