Not dead. 

Dev has underlined like 9 times that they've done their best to make the new stuff mostly compatible with the old and they just need to work on bringing animations and some systems into the new, future-proofed code. 

Game development takes time. You've never made anything. Go sit on your thumb and hop, when you come back in a year and the game is getting new content you can shoot wads to it.
