I have a couple of rules questions. I know the default answer to these types of questions tend to be "it's a solo rpg do whatever you want" or "it's a journaling game, do what's best for the narrative", however I like to rely on the mechanics to drive the story telling, sometimes forcing decisions that are sub-optimal or that I wouldn't ordinarily make, so I hope the author can share their intent or opinion on a couple of things.

1: Overcome the Odds specifically says it  "can be used against one Unfortunate Event (black cards)". It is possible to encounter Combat on Favorable (red card) events. Would you allow using Overcome the Odds to avoid those combats? If so, when you "skip its effects" I assume that would mean that due to avoiding the combat you also to not get the reward (ITEM)?

2: Is the (DEPTH) tag considered an "effect" that you skip when you Overcome the Odds, or is a separate thing, so you don't lose Morale or Supplies or whatever but still fall down the hole and use the Aldwund chart the next day?

I guess both questions kind of hinge on, are tags like (ITEM) and (DEPTH) considered effects of the event, or are they separate from the benefits or penalties of the card and thus not altered by Overcome the Odds?

Thanks for your time. I crowdfunded this game and just recently had time to really dive into it. I love it so far and can't wait to try out all the expansions.
