This is the first visual novel I’ve played, and it latched onto me like a parasite until I finished it. When I wasn’t playing it, I was super anxious about whether or not the characters were going to be ok or happy by the end, which is something I haven’t experienced to this degree with a game or story before.
I picked a hell of a time to play it, going through a period of change in my life, trying to find a job post college, feeling lonely, a bit depressed, (still) being unsure of my own sexuality with a family that I’m sure would shun me in different ways if they found out. I knew what I was getting into due to what little I knew about the game’s reputation, but I was not expecting to ugly cry so hard and fall so hard in love with the main love interest, Amicus, as much as I did.
The characters, writing and world are so good and fleshed out, and the relationships feel so grounded. Though there are several (lovely) sex/18+ scenes, all the romantic moments, including those, are about so much more than just sex. Everything is so loving, intimate and human with really good pacing. It’s not just a romance, but a political drama, thriller, and cosmic horror. Even if you’re not queer or a furry, I recommend giving it a chance if you’re interested.
I love and hate you Echo Project. I will be thinking about this and feeling empty for a week or more. 😂
