I thought that might be what happened (minus Cole kills Chloe - totally missed that - thought she died as an accident); but I wasn't sure.
I was thinking one of the following must be the case:
1) Cole killed himself;
2) it is deliberately ambiguous as a dramatic ending;
3) it is unfinished.
