“It’s In The Vents!” delivers a surprisingly tense solo survival experience by converting a standard 54-card deck into an alien-infested starship. Built on a 4x6 grid, the core objective is straightforward: navigate from your escape pod (the Red Joker) to rescue your cat Holmes (the Black Joker) and return safely before your distance counter drops from 8 down to 0. Mechanically, it balances risk and positioning well—every room transition incurs a baseline -1 distance penalty, which gets modified by room suits like Hearts (+2 hiding spots), Diamonds (+1 or +2 distractions), or Clubs (-1 noise penalties). The game’s smartest design choice lies in its backtracking rules: traversing between two already-revealed, non-Court red cards costs zero movement distance. This mechanic rewards careful pathfinding on your way in, making your retreat feel earned rather than purely arbitrary.
The downside is that the game’s difficulty relies entirely on raw card draw RNG, offering almost no room for tactical recovery if the shuffle works against you. Because fuel cells are strictly tied to Court Cards and serve as your only way to stabilize unstable Spades corridors or survive an alien attack at zero distance, drawing a cluster of noise-inducing Clubs early without finding fuel can end a run in under five minutes. Additionally, while the setup sets a compelling sci-fi horror tone, the gameplay itself is entirely abstract; you won’t find atmospheric room descriptions or event prompts unless you supply the narrative flavor yourself. Ultimately, it works well as a fast-paced, 10-minute push-your-luck puzzle, but it lacks the strategic depth or story mechanics needed for a deeper tabletop experience.
