While this is basically FPS chess but 2d top-down, the enemies have interesting powers which makes it different. Yes you can win just buy running around in a circle, but that can be easily fixed by making the enemies faster and stronger. In my opinion you should lock the pieces to the grid and keep their original chess moves (except pawn so they can move in all directions) while still giving them powers.
