Same issue for me, turning off background animations did not change it. I clicked around randomly and was able to still begin the game. Playing on a Mac, in Chrome.
Second round, after playing a round of cards the new cards deal out but are invisible until I click one of them. Hope that's helpful, good luck w a fix for it. Looking forward to checking out the new version.
