It's a puzzle game, so you need to figure out a way to actually make progress. The way you just described is obviously a dead end, so that's not the right answer for you. Consider this turn of events:
0. Don't take hero 10 CL
1. Move to and kill bandits 9 CL + 3 Rewards
2. Move to town, cash in. 11 CL. Don't take hero.
3. Move to and kill bear. 10 CL + 3
4. Return home and cash in and get a hero. 10 CL
5. Move to and kill Goblins. 8 CL + 3
6. Move to and kill Witch. 7 CL + 9
7. Move to and kill ogre. 4 CL + 12
8. Return home and cash in. 14 CL.
Take the safe stuff first to build up some wealth to fuel longer adventures. Keep in mind you don't NEED to take a hero. It's risk vs reward - optional, and frankly a waste on the easier enemies. You'll need that cash later for the really tough stuff!
Also keep in mind that the PDF rules have difficulty modes, if you want to feel like more of a hero. I wanted the base version to be just BARELY doable.
