Yeah, I've been thinking about it a lot as well. If you're interested, this visual novel was heavily inspired by Orientalism and the Paisley Pattern, which a friend brought up to me while this was in development. More than being cool and trendy to be alien, it's more like they want to rip aspects from this "fantasy place" and claim it as their own. The article I linked above goes on to say how even the most common person in the UK can participate in imperialism by wearing paisley shawls.
