Never mind, found it; this post is actually ancient. Whoops. Version 1.4.1 works fine on Linux! I did have to go install gconf 3.2.6 and libconf 2-4 manually, but after that it worked great, not sure why others reported performance issues. I had none.
That said, the actual game seems like it might be too weird and scary for me to actually complete :-O ...
