Thank you!! ^^
I use the Twine game engine, which is specifically made for interactive fiction. The coding ranges from extremely easy to very difficult depending on what you want to do. The story coding is very easy, so it's beginner-friendly (1-3). Other extra mechanics like in-game social media, texting, etc are much much harder (7-10), but they are entirely optional. If you so wish, you don't even have to touch JavaScript (that's what I write game mechanics in). You can create a full game without it.
The hardest part is definitely making said mechanics, like the DDD, Sinistr's social media, and the art-based room customization I'm currently working on (what's in the published game right now is only text-based).
And lastly, the best tip is really to plan plan plan - that way you don't have to go back and rewrite all your effort once a system stops working - and make use of free resources! There are tons for any game engine you choose, and you can go so far with reading the documents and watching youtube tutorials.
