Thank you for the details. That is definitely not normal behavior.
Characters should appear in about 0.15 seconds, and each message should normally appear within about 0.5–1 second. If it takes over 20 seconds and clicking does not advance the text, something is not displaying correctly.
Could you let me know which version you played, whether this happened in the browser version or the downloaded version, and what OS/browser you were using?
