Oh that's the time limit for taking to long to get the key and reach the next floor. You will notice an energy bar in the corner that appears for every quarter interval, and once it depletes, ghosts will constantly spawn in safe rooms with the strength of the next loop. There is a upgrade to see a precise gauge, but like I said in my guide, it's not worth it.
