The whole idea came to me because at that time Godot just released a new feature called "stencil buffer". I found many videos on youtube explaining it. If you just search for "godot stencil buffer" I am sure you will find even newer and better tutorials .
If you still need help, I am more then happy to send you the source code and/or explain it in more details if you still need help.

Thanks for the response. My project was in 4.4.1, and last night I realized that 4.5 added stencil buffer! I'm glad you responded, though, because I was really curious which direction you went. I especially liked how you used it as a visual mask but then also as a way to have certain objects start or cease to exist. I'll look this all up on YouTube like you said. :)
