Best way I've found to get aether is through artifacts at the casino.
Duplicates give 100 aether each while only costing 50 gold, which is easy to stockpile by accepting all 3 curses at the beginning of each run and filling up your safe spaces
I also get a few aether after each run, but I don't know why or how, and it's much less than through the casino
