For the mechanics I wanted the shop upgrades to have a long term effect of making you stronger and have a goal to feed it. But still have in-world items that modifies the vessel behaviour and adding some interest in navigating the world. It can also be used strategically , perhaps save a little speed boost triangle and time modifier before towing back a relic for example.
