I retrieved the guide book from the bookshelf on the wall. After reading through, I destroyed it to free up space in my inventory. When I went to get another guidebook, I got a message saying that there was no space in my inventory. There was absolutely space, so I'm assuming that my inventory is currently flagged as having a guidebook already even though I destroyed my copy.
