Yeah that's a known bug and I have no idea what causes it, but it seems to only happen sometimes and only happen when you are crouched while picking the thing up (I was never able to reproduce this bug so I wasn't able to fix it, the only person who encountered it was DevBob). The theme is introduced after picking up the cylinder, when it says the thing holding you in the solar system is invincible. Sad that you didn't get to see the rest of the game though.
