Ensuring that the game was winnable and losable was a core goal of phase 1, so there is a way to win - don't give up.
The coffee will go cold over time, when it does hero will reject it. You should see some steam rising from the cup to show it's still hot, but I'll be sure what's happening clearer in the next update.
