The goal is better explained in the description. You are from that village and for some reason were put to play with the fate of your village. You can either save it (which I think would be the goal for most people), or destroy it!
It is a bit of a memory game yeah, but you do have the memory button on the left (or by clicking T), which when toggled can help you: when you hover over a card, it says its effect if you have used it already).
