I understand what you mean about the checklist not feeling very "detective-like." One of my playtesters mentioned that navigating across up to three dimensions at once felt a bit overwhelming, so I've added more quests to improve the flow and pacing.

Do you think something like an optional "detective mode" in the future — with fewer explicit objectives and more reliance on environmental clues — would improve the investigative feel?

I suppose so ! I guess ideally you'd want the game to gently give hints when the player appears to have struggled for a while... Well, what you did made sense too in the scope of this jam !
