The first point is the doom of most promising projects. Putting aside the matter of dishonest developers who intentionally drag it on for subscription revenue, there's no shortage of other examples out there where a zombie project shambles on for years even though it's dead obvious the developer is bored. From the consumer POV you can tell when you start seeing updates that are just changing random mechanics and experimenting on what should be a mature product; the dev clearly wants to make a new game and has new ideas they want to try, but are building that on top of their existing project when it should have been left alone and finished.
