Hornet actually speeds up with time, so you'll notice it more if you try saving Sherma or Cornifer. The idea behind not having the ability to sprint is to give a sense of dread that if the player takes too long in the cave, there is no way to escape Hornet because she becomes faster than the player after about 7 minutes.
