As long as you have saves from the previous version that are compatible (which they all are, the last time we needed to start over with a new version/update was long ago), they should transfer over just fine...well, on Windows at least. Haven't tried with other devices.
Ya unless the best doggy does an update that makes new code not happy with old code you just download update and are able to keep using your old saves.
