If you have the latest version, you should be able to save the game on Android also (ditto PC).
The game is paused, if you you open the settings popup. Other than that, you can enable the "Game Speed Controls" checkbox in the settings, so it will always be on screen. The game speed options are hidden by default on Android, as they use a lot of screen real-estate.
