He said something like this

"They must be able to see colors, since the station was built in gray. And Marruk likes red, but not blue, which means they (the Karains) can distinguish colors. They know how to cry; when Tucker broke the phone, it said he heard Marruk crying. There was no mention of barking or howling; perhaps their language is barking, but only Tucker understands it, so to us it's like English. I don't even want to think about canine characteristics. I think I understand what you meant. There doesn't seem to be any involuntary tail wagging, but some factors influence it. Tucker saw Marruk's tail wagging under the blanket. Could it be because he was happy? They had just hugged."

Yeah i get that in this evolved species can clearly see in color, which is nice that they hinted at it as others don't. They just assume we would forget that our dogs didn't evolve that ability. Only Lyre kinda comes out and says they're able to see color when they had Lyall say, "I love red, it's my favorite color." Ugh, Lyall is by far my fave wolf/canine MC, probably fave regardless of species actually. Anyway.  I don't think any tail movements are truly involuntary with canines, they just don't realize they're doing it at times, but there is always a reason. Yeah  for all we know he is barking, growling etc because we're hearing the translated language in Tucker's slowly scrambling mind.
